The settings for her performance work are both site-specific and theatrical. She also works with the visual elements of space and composition, which she incorporates into photography.
Ms. Anthony originally established herself in the Midwest as a three-dimensional artist focusing on sculptural assemblage. Her work was presented in numerous group exhibits and a one-person show. During this time, she initiated partnerships with artists in multiple mediums, including dance, film, and photography. Moving to Boston, Massachusetts, she received her Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Interrelated Media from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in the department of Media and Performing Arts. Over a 15 year period on the East Coast, she was awarded 11 commissions for independent and joint projects involving dance, sound, video and performance. She independently produced the evening-length works Serious Dances, Migration, and The Courting of Risk. She performed with Semaphore Dance Theatre under the direction of Janice Margolis at the Fogg Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and at California College of the Arts in Oakland, California. She presented in the Boston/Cambridge area at The Brattle Theater, Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tufts University, Montserrat College of Art, MOBIUS, Northeastern University, Newton Arts Center, Basement |
Gallery, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Straightline Studio, Dance Complex, South Shore Arts Center, and the University of Massachusetts.
In the Midwest she presented at Athenaeum Theater, Hot House, Gere Dismer Performance Space, and Legion Arts/CSPS. Ms. Anthony was a grant recipient from Art Matters, Inc. (New York) for her project BOTH VERY SOME WORDS, which transforms a dream through 5 different artistic mediums. She recorded and engineered the sound track for the documentary Columbia Point, produced by photographer Linda Swartz, which received a Massachusetts Artist Fellowship in the category of Interarts. Ms. Anthony teaches choreography, improvisation, and contact improvisation, and participates in the facilitation of authentic movement practice. A former certified fitness instructor through the American Council on Exercise (ACE), she now enjoys swimming and yoga. Her creative thinking and performance is inspired by the innocence of children, authenticity of animals, design of nature, writing, and human fragility. Her movement vocabulary derives from core expression influenced by physical, mental and emotional impulses during the practice of improvisation. She enjoys collaborative efforts with artists of all media, and exhibits versatility working with and directing both trained artists and pedestrian movers. She seizes opportunity for chance occurrence in her process, and is devoted to performing and encouraging work that jumps traditional boundaries. |
